Filling Sand Bags Fast - DIY Sandbag FIller

by Andrew Foley on Dec 19, 2023

Why Use Sandbags?

Sandbags are one of the essential items around the farm, and we use tons of them. They are perfect for holding down landscape fabric or frost-protection barriers that will need to be moved later. Landscaping stakes, while much easier to use, are just not practical for these cases; they aren't easily removed without tearing the fabric.

Increasing Efficiency

If you've ever been tasked with the job of filling sandbags with a shovel - especially a large number of them - you know this is a tedious and frustrating process, especially if working alone.

However, we have discovered how to fill sandbags fast with this DIY sand bag filler. Made from super-durable 8" PVC (used for standard 14" x 26" sandbags) easily sourced from your local hardware or irrigation supply store, and modified using basic power tools, it is by far the simplest, cheapest, and best way to fill sandbags efficiently.

Make your own in 3 simple steps:

1. Start with a 3-foot (or whatever length suits your arm span) piece of PVC in your needed diameter, depending on the size of your sandbag. We used 8" PVC for 14"x28" sandbags.

2. Cut the holes out for your handle as shown in the video. You can use a Dremel (Multi) Tool, Reciprocating Saw, Circular Saw, or any combination of these to get your preferred cut.

3. Sand down the rough edges around the handle cutout, and you're good to go!

Other Common Uses for Sandbags

Flood & Erosion Control:

Sandbags are commonly used to create barriers and levees to prevent or control flooding. Placing sandbags strategically along riverbanks, shorelines, or around buildings can help divert or contain floodwaters. In areas prone to soil erosion, sandbags can be deployed to stabilize soil and prevent the loss of land. They are often used on construction sites, hillsides, or coastal areas to control the impact of water and wind.

Ballast and Weight:

Sandbags are used as a form of ballast to anchor objects or structures in place. They provide stability and prevent movement, making them useful in construction, temporary installations, or for securing items during windy conditions.

Training and Exercise:

Sandbags are frequently used in fitness training and exercise routines. They serve as versatile and adjustable weights, allowing individuals to perform a variety of strength and resistance exercises, such as lifts, carries, and squats, both indoors and outdoors.
